JOSS STONE

DATE: SATURDAY 5. AUGUST 2017 VENUE: Hovigs Hangar TIME: 16:45

British soul pioneer with a voice as big as heaven

For Amy Winehouse, Duffy and Adele and countless others, it was all about Joss Stone, who shot like a comet up into the musical stratosphere as her organic recordings of soul music and voice won over young women all over the world who followed her lead into this new style of musical adventure.

The British soul singer and songwriter became a pioneer when at the young age of 15 she signed a record contract with EMI, and then the next year in 2003 at 16 debuted with the multi-platinum album ‘The Soul Sessions’. ‘The Soul Sessions’ reached the top 5 on the UK charts and top 40 in the US, spawning the hit single ‘Fell in Love with a Boy’ – a loose rewrite of the White Stripes ‘Fell in Love with a Girl’, which broke into the UK top 20 singles chart.

Joss, the young 16 year-old from Dover, had experienced success in record time but it was only the beginning of what has been an enormously successful career. The next year came the album ‘Mind, Body and Soul’, a collection of self-written material that continued to strengthen her influence and success. The album went like a rocket into the number 1 spot on the UK charts, with Joss becoming the youngest women ever to top the album list in the UK. The single ‘You Had Me’ gave Joss her first top 10 hit.

“Introducing Joss Stone” was the next album, which became her first top 5 album in the US, and was the second highest debut ever on the Billboard 200 for a British solo female artist. Since then, this Grammy and Brit Award winning artist has sold 14 million albums, including four top 10 albums on the US Billboard 200 – all for a young woman who just turned 30 years of age this past April.

Joss Stone’s rare talent has been noticed and appreciated far and wide within the music industry and has led to concerts and studio cooperation with such high-profile music luminaries as Mick Jagger, James Brown, Steven Wonder, Buddy Guy, Ringo Starr and Jeff Beck.

Her long-anticipated performance at the Notodden Blues Festival on Saturday August 5th will be the icing on the cake as she performs on the same epic evening as Buddy Guy and Little Steven & the Disciples of Soul – the highpoint of the 30th year of this legendary festival.
